WILKES-BARRE, Pa. — A 53-year-old Wilkes-Barre resident was scammed out of $1,000 after being targeted in a phone fraud scheme, according to the Wilkes-Barre City Police Department.
The victim reported the incident to police on September 9, 2024, at approximately 6:18 p.m. He told officers that he received a call from a male posing as a “Federal Agent,” who claimed there was a warrant for his arrest. The scammer directed the victim to send $1,000 via Western Union, which the victim did before realizing it was a fraud.
The investigation into the incident is ongoing, and police are urging residents to be cautious of similar scams.
