SUMTER COUNTY, SC – The Inmate litter pickup program has used local inmates to help keep the Sumter County roadways clean. When COVID-19 came, that program was put on hold and the county is now facing a growing litter problem.
Operation Pride
Sheriff William O’ Farmer, Jr. wants to clean up the county’s image and is asking volunteers to pitch in.
“Sumter County Sheriff’s Office has heard the community’s concerns about the growing litter issue throughout the county and we are asking for help from citizens to get Sumter County’s roadways back on track with Operation Pride,” the sheriff said.
To counter the postponement of the local inmate litter pickup program, Sumter County Sheriff’s Office — in partnership with South Carolina Palmetto Pride and the City of Sumter will host a litter pickup day from 9 a.m. to 12 p.m. on Saturday, April 17.
Community volunteers needed
“This is a unified, countywide operation,” the sheriff added. “We are asking neighborhood watch groups, businesses, organizations and other members of the community to create teams and volunteer alongside law enforcement to clean up some of our most affected areas.”
Volunteers should wear bright and reflective clothing to stay visible while working. Gloves, bags and other supplies will be provided at Greater Sumter Chamber of Commerce, 32 E. Calhoun St. Volunteers are welcome to bring their own supplies.
Team locations will be announced at a later date. This operation will be held in conjunction with the City of Sumter’s Community Clean Up Days project.
