Mother arrested after kicking pregnant school officer in the stomach

WASHINGTON, NC – A Washington woman was arrested at an elementary school after deputies say she refused to leave campus during a custody dispute and assaulted a pregnant school resource officer during a struggle in the front office.

The incident occurred around 2:15 p.m. on January 29 at John Small Elementary School, where the school resource officer responded to the front office for a parent demanding to see her daughter, according to the Beaufort County Sheriff’s Office.

Deputies said the parent was identified as 44-year-old Khadeeja Muhammad of Washington. The school resource officer, who was familiar with Muhammad, informed her that the school was verifying whether she was permitted to see the child due to a pending custody issue and that Muhammad did not currently have custody.

Authorities said Muhammad became agitated and began yelling profanities inside the school office. When she was instructed to leave the building, she refused, prompting the pregnant school resource officer to request additional assistance.

Once additional deputies and officers arrived, Muhammad was physically removed from the building due to continued behavior that included throwing water from a bottle at staff, resisting commands, and becoming combative, according to the sheriff’s office. During the removal, investigators said Muhammad kicked the school resource officer in the stomach.

Muhammad was taken into custody and charged with misdemeanor resisting a public officer, assault on a government official, assault on a pregnant woman, second-degree trespassing, and disorderly conduct. She was confined in the Beaufort County Detention Center under no bond.

The sheriff’s office said the school resource officer was not injured in the incident. Sheriff Scott Hammonds said he was thankful the deputy and her unborn child were unharmed and noted the incident underscores the need for additional mental health resources in Beaufort County.
