Woman accused of stabbing man in neck as he slept in Massapequa basement

Prosecutors say a Long Island woman retrieved a knife from her purse and fatally stabbed a longtime acquaintance while he slept in his own bed.

MINEOLA, N.Y. — A 22-year-old Massapequa woman has been indicted on a murder charge after prosecutors say she stabbed a 28-year-old man in the neck while he slept in his basement bedroom, then hid nearby as police rushed to the scene.

Kristin Sculley was arraigned Wednesday on a grand jury indictment charging her with second-degree murder in the death of Robert Carragher III, according to Nassau County District Attorney Anne T. Donnelly.

Sculley pleaded not guilty and was remanded to custody. She is scheduled to return to court on July 24. If convicted, she faces up to 25 years to life in prison.

According to prosecutors, Sculley arrived at Carragher’s home on Beaumont Avenue in Massapequa at about 8:40 p.m. on May 31. The two had known each other for several years and spent the evening watching television in the victim’s basement bedroom.

At some point during the early morning hours of June 1, prosecutors allege Sculley left the bedroom, retrieved a knife from her purse in an adjacent room and returned.

Authorities allege she then stabbed Carragher in the neck while he was sleeping.

Prosecutors said Carragher woke up and ran upstairs to his parents’ room, yelling that he had been stabbed.

When Nassau County police officers arrived, they found him lying on the kitchen floor with a stab wound to his neck. He was pronounced dead.

Police located Sculley hiding in a basement laundry room near the victim’s bedroom. Investigators said she had blood on her clothing, and a knife was recovered in the laundry room.

Sculley was arrested by the Nassau County Police Department’s Homicide Squad on June 1.

The charges are accusations, and Sculley is presumed innocent unless proven guilty in court.
