Police say the impact left another driver seriously injured and shut the road for four hours
LAUREL, DE – A 54-year-old Delaware woman was killed Thursday evening when a pickup truck failed to stop at a stop sign and slammed into the driver’s side of her SUV at a Laurel intersection, leaving the other driver seriously injured and the roadway closed for about four hours, state police said.
The two-vehicle crash occurred at approximately 5 p.m. at Salt Barn Road and Old Stage Road.
According to a preliminary investigation by Delaware State Police, a Nissan Frontier was traveling west on Salt Barn Road and approaching the stop sign at Old Stage Road.
At the same time, a Kia Sportage was heading south on Old Stage Road toward Salt Barn Road.
Police said the Nissan failed to stop at the stop sign and struck the driver’s-side front of the Kia.
The Kia’s driver, a 54-year-old woman from Delmar, Delaware, was pronounced dead at the scene.
Her name was being withheld pending notification of her family.
The Nissan was driven by a 63-year-old Laurel man, according to state police.
He was transported to an area hospital with serious injuries.
Police did not provide an update on his condition or announce any charges in their Friday release.
The collision forced authorities to close the roadway for approximately four hours while investigators examined the scene and the wreckage was cleared.
The Delaware State Police Troop 7 Collision Reconstruction Unit is continuing to investigate the fatal crash.
Investigators are seeking witnesses and anyone who may have video connected to the collision.
