Trenton man turns himself in after girlfriend fatally shot in early morning attack
Trenton, NJ — A 36-year-old man surrendered to police Sunday following an early morning shooting in Trenton that left his girlfriend dead and another woman wounded, according to the Mercer County Prosecutor’s Office.
Lamont Truitt, of Trenton, has been charged with first-degree murder in the killing, along with first-degree attempted murder, first-degree carjacking, and multiple weapons offenses. Investigators say Truitt turned himself in to Trenton Police later that day and is now being held pending trial.
The violence unfolded just before 6 a.m. on Sunday, when a ShotSpotter alert led police to Oakland Street after several rounds were detected. Trenton Police officers responded to multiple 911 calls, including one reporting a woman had been shot.
Officers found a 25-year-old woman on the 200 block of Coolidge Avenue suffering from a gunshot wound to the leg. She was taken to Capital Health Regional Medical Center. Her current condition was not disclosed.
At the same time, a separate 911 caller reported seeing a woman being shot several times by a man fleeing in a silver four-door vehicle. The Mercer County Homicide Task Force and Trenton Police Department began an investigation, which led to the identification of a second shooting victim—Truitt’s girlfriend—who was later confirmed dead.
Prosecutors say Truitt also faces multiple second-degree weapons charges, including unlawful possession of a handgun and possession of a weapon for an unlawful purpose. He is also accused of being a person not permitted to possess a firearm due to prior convictions.
Detective Luis Vega of the Mercer County Homicide Task Force led the investigation, piecing together the timeline using advanced investigative tools and intelligence from local law enforcement agencies.
Truitt is being held as the prosecutor’s office has filed a motion to detain him pending trial.
