Woman Killed in Single Vehicle Crash on I-97

June 7, 2024

ANNAPOLIS, MD – A fatal crash in Anne Arundel County is currently under investigation by the Maryland State Police. The incident, involving a single vehicle, occurred Thursday night on the ramp to Route 50 East from southbound Interstate 97.

Shannon Rita Alan, a 29-year-old resident of Annapolis, was the sole occupant and driver of a 2020 Honda HR-V. She was pronounced dead at the scene by Anne Arundel County emergency medical services.

Preliminary findings suggest the vehicle departed the roadway for undetermined reasons and collided with an embankment. Investigators have indicated that impairment does not appear to be a factor in the crash.

The Maryland Department of Transportation State Highway Administration was on site to manage road closures, while the Maryland State Police Crash Team has taken the lead in the ongoing investigation into the cause of the crash.
