Woman killed in Wilmington crash after storm-toppled tree hits SUV

WILMINGTON, Del. — A 79-year-old woman was killed in a single-vehicle crash late Monday night after a falling tree struck an SUV during a thunderstorm, according to the Delaware State Police.

The incident occurred around 10:08 p.m. on Lancaster Pike near Hedgerow Place. A 2015 Lexus RX was traveling westbound when a tree fell into the roadway due to severe weather. The vehicle veered left in an attempt to avoid the tree but was hit in the front by the falling debris.

The passenger, a Newark woman, was pronounced dead at the scene. Her name is being withheld pending family notification. The 79-year-old male driver, also from Newark, sustained serious injuries and was transported to a local hospital.
