NEW YORK — In a head-turning encounter orchestrated by Guinness World Records, the world’s shortest dog and tallest dog met for the first time this month — and the height difference was as stunning as it was heartwarming.

Pearl, a 3.59-inch-tall chihuahua from Florida, and Reggie, a 3-foot-3-inch Great Dane from Idaho, stood nose-to-knee at Reggie’s home, where the pair enjoyed a playful and cautious introduction. The furry celebrities are officially the shortest and tallest living dogs, respectively.

Key Points

  • Pearl, a chihuahua from Florida, is the world’s shortest living dog at 3.59 inches tall.
  • Reggie, a Great Dane from Idaho, is the tallest at 3 feet 3 inches.
  • The two met in Idaho for a Guinness World Records-organized visit.

Pearl’s owner, Vanesa Semler, made the cross-country trip to Idaho for the meetup. “When Pearl meets bigger dogs, she is really friendly,” she said before the meeting. “I think she has no idea she is a small dog.”

Reggie’s owner, Sam Johnson Reiss, shared similar optimism before the pups met, saying Reggie is “very, very cautious and aware” and predicted he would be gentle around Pearl.

Their meeting confirmed those expectations. Despite the dramatic size gap — roughly the height of a baseball bat — the interaction was playful, calm, and safe.

Big paws, big heart: Reggie shows gentle side

Reggie’s careful behavior helped ease any pre-meeting nerves. “There was a little bit of anxiety,” Sam admitted. “But I think he was very gentle [and] very, very kind [to Pearl], as best as he could be.”

Vanesa noted Reggie’s restraint and sensitivity during the visit. “That’s an amazing quality. That talks a lot about how caring and loving he is,” she said.

The dogs’ mutual friendliness and the owners’ shared appreciation made the meeting a smooth success, and both pups quickly settled into post-visit naps once the cameras stopped flashing.

Owners reflect on once-in-a-lifetime pet moment

The owners reflected on the joy their record-breaking pets bring to others. “If Reggie gives happiness to any one person, that will be great for him,” Sam said. Vanesa added, “They’re part of the family.”

Both agreed the experience brought them closer, and emphasized the special bond people form with animals of all sizes.

A chihuahua the size of a soda can and a Great Dane taller than a toddler proved friendship comes in all sizes.
