RIDGEFIELD PARK, N.J. – A 44-year-old Pennsylvania man was killed this weekend after driving the wrong way on the New Jersey Turnpike and colliding head-on with another vehicle in Bergen County, authorities said.
New Jersey State Police reported that Bruce Canfield of Pottstown was driving a Ford pickup truck southbound in the northbound lanes of the Turnpike when he struck a Honda sedan near milepost 117.8 around 3 a.m. The Honda, driven by a 39-year-old man from Poughkeepsie, was traveling northbound when the crash occurred.
The impact sent the pickup into a concrete barrier. Canfield was pronounced dead at the scene, while the Honda driver suffered serious injuries and was taken to a nearby hospital for treatment, according to Sgt. Jeffrey Lebron.
State Police continue to investigate the circumstances leading up to the fatal wrong-way collision.
