One number kept the longtime Lottery player from a life-changing jackpot, but he still walked away with a $50,000 prize.
WALDORF, MD — After years of buying Powerball tickets and dreaming about a big win, a Waldorf man finally struck it lucky when one missing number stood between him and the jackpot, earning him a $50,000 prize instead.
The Maryland Lottery said the Charles County resident matched four of the first five white balls and the Powerball in the May 23 drawing to claim a third-tier prize worth $50,000.
The winner recently visited Maryland Lottery headquarters in Baltimore with his daughter to claim the prize after holding onto the winning ticket until Sunday, July 27.
According to Lottery officials, the man has been purchasing a few tickets each week for many years, primarily playing Powerball because he enjoys the possibility of winning.
His daughter said the family had been watching an episode of My Lottery Dream Home when they reminded him to pick up his tickets for the drawing.
“Just for fun, and looking to get lucky,” the winner said of why he continues to play.
Despite the windfall, he said he has no immediate plans for the money and intends to set it aside until deciding how to use it.
The winning ticket was purchased May 22 at Korner Liquors, located at 3120 Old Washington Road in Waldorf.
The Powerball jackpot continues to grow, with an estimated annuity of $663 million for the Tuesday, July 29, drawing, or a cash option of $290.4 million.
