Yonkers high school on lockdown after student injured in knife incident

November 14, 2024

YONKERS, NY — Gorton High School was placed on lockdown Thursday morning after a student brought a knife into the building, leading to a confrontation that left one person injured, according to the Yonkers Police Department. Authorities say the student responsible is in custody and that there is no ongoing threat to students or staff.

The incident, which occurred earlier in the day, resulted in a single injury. Police stated that the injured student is in stable condition, and Yonkers Public School officials are in contact with the student’s family.

As a precaution, Gorton High School remains on lockdown while police continue their investigation. The school has barred families from picking up students until the building is fully secured and the lockdown is lifted, a measure officials expect to conclude shortly. Once lifted, classes are scheduled to resume as planned for the remainder of the school day.

“We are taking every measure to ensure the safety of all students and staff,” the Yonkers Police Department said in a statement posted on social media, assuring the community that additional updates will be provided as information becomes available.
