Capitol Heights, MD – The Prince George’s County Police Department has filed charges against a man in connection with a series of violent crimes that occurred on Sunday.

The suspect, identified as 22-year-old Daeyon Ross from Washington, DC, is facing charges including murder, carjacking, and animal cruelty. The charges stem from a fatal shooting, multiple armed carjackings, and the killing of two dogs.

The incident unfolded on July 2, 2023, around 12:10 pm when the PGPD received a report of a carjacking in the vicinity of Addison Road South and Rolling Ridge Drive in Capitol Heights. According to preliminary investigations, Ross allegedly carjacked a Honda CRV at gunpoint. Shortly after, a collision occurred involving the CRV at Central Avenue and Ritchie Road. Ross fled from the crash scene and sought refuge in the parking lot of a fast-food restaurant on Ritchie Road.

It was there that he approached an Acura ILX in the drive-thru lane and attempted to carjack the driver, identified as 56-year-old Kurt Modeste. During the carjacking attempt, Ross shot Modeste multiple times, prompting the victim to flee the scene. Unfortunately, Modeste succumbed to his injuries a short distance away.

Following the shooting, Ross carjacked a Toyota Scion that was also present in the drive-thru lane. Tragically, three dogs were inside the stolen vehicle, and Ross callously shot and killed two of them. Ross fled the area in the stolen Scion, heading westbound on Central Avenue. A multi-agency pursuit ensued, with officers from various police departments, including the PGPD, pursuing Ross into Washington, DC. Eventually, at the intersection of 52nd Street and Sheriff Road, Ross abandoned the stolen Scion and carjacked a GMC Terrain. However, a collision occurred shortly afterward. As officers closed in on the scene, an officer from the Capitol Heights Police Department engaged with Ross, resulting in an officer-involved shooting. Thankfully, neither the officer nor Ross sustained injuries in the exchange. Ross was subsequently apprehended, and a loaded weapon was recovered at the scene.

At present, Ross is in custody in Washington, DC, awaiting extradition to Prince George’s County. The Prince George’s County Police Department has charged him with first-degree and second-degree murder, armed carjacking, assault, firearms offenses, aggravated cruelty to an animal, and additional charges.

Authorities are urging anyone with information related to this case to come forward and speak with a detective from the Homicide Unit by calling 301-516-2512.
