Former Toms River Teacher Receives Jail Sentence for Child Endangerment

Kyle Banner, 49, of Brick Township, has been sentenced to 180 days in Ocean County Jail and placed under Parole Supervision for Life after pleading guilty to three counts of Endangering the Welfare of a Child on November 6, 2023. Judge Ryan also ordered the forfeiture of Banner’s teaching license and prohibited him from future public employment. Additionally, Banner is obligated to register as a Megan’s Law offender and adhere to the terms of Nicole’s Law, which restrict contact with his victims.

The case emerged when administrators at Toms River Intermediate North were notified on April 23, 2023, that Banner, who taught at both the school and Ocean County College, had posted sexually explicit images on his public Twitter profile. Consequently, Banner was suspended without pay the following day.

A joint investigation by law enforcement agencies, including the Ocean County Prosecutor’s Office Special Victims Unit, discovered that students had accessed Banner’s Twitter profile and viewed the explicit material. Further investigation revealed that the photos were taken in Banner’s Toms River Intermediate North classroom. Detectives also uncovered evidence that Banner had sent inappropriate images to a student via Snapchat between October and December 2022, and had engaged in misconduct in his classroom, as documented in recovered images.

Banner surrendered himself to the Toms River Township Police Department on May 23, 2023, and was processed before being taken to Ocean County Jail. He was subsequently released under New Jersey’s Bail Reform measures. He was listed as being incarcerated at the Ocean County jail today.
