Father Son Duo Dedicates Time to Toms River Fire Department

TOMS RIVER, NJ—In Toms River, the Rice family exemplifies a multi-generational commitment to service. Matthew Rice, 23, recently earned his master’s degree in fire science, specializing in explosion and investigation. He follows in the footsteps of a long line of family members dedicated to community service, including his father, Dave Rice, 47, who has served as an EMT and firefighter for over three decades.

Both father and son volunteer at Toms River Fire Co. No. 2, where they find quality time in their shared duty. Dave, who holds the position of Assistant Chief, cherishes the camaraderie and the opportunity to mentor his son. Despite their busy schedules, the firehouse provides a unique setting where they can connect and collaborate.

He now works at Silverton EMS and is completing an internship with “Find the Cause” Investigations, LLC.

Dave emphasizes the rewarding nature of volunteer firefighting and the sense of brotherhood it fosters. Meanwhile, Matthew highlights the personal growth and professional networking opportunities he has gained through his experiences.
