BEDMINSTER, N.J. — President Donald Trump took fresh jabs at tech billionaire Elon Musk over the weekend while departing his golf club in New Jersey, dismissing speculation of a third party effort and addressing trade letters, Israel negotiations, and federal budget issues.
When asked about Musk and a possible third party creation, named the America Party, Trump said, “I think it’s ridiculous to start a third party… Third parties have never worked. So, he can have fun with it, but I think it’s ridiculous.”
While he didn’t elaborate on any direct exchange with Musk, Trump said he had not received a “golden key back from Elon.”
The president also commented on upcoming trade communications, saying letters will begin going out Monday and continue through midweek. “It could be maybe as many as 15 or so,” Trump said, adding that some trade deals have already been made.
On foreign policy, Trump said he expects progress in talks with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, suggesting a deal on Gaza could be imminent. “I think we’re close to a deal on Gaza. We could have it this week,” Trump said, without providing further details.
Trump also referenced Iran, asserting that prior military strikes had left Iranian nuclear capabilities “obliterated,” and said any permanent deal would require them to abandon certain programs.
While shifting between topics, Trump reiterated his belief in the two-party political system, calling efforts to form a third party confusing and ineffective.
The appearance concluded Trump’s weekend at his Bedminster resort, where he briefly addressed reporters on a range of ongoing issues.
