NEWARK, DE — An 89-year-old New Castle man was killed early Thursday morning after being struck by a vehicle while attempting to cross Pulaski Highway, Delaware State Police said.

The incident occurred around 5:07 a.m. near the intersection of Pulaski Highway and Biddle Avenue. According to investigators, a 2020 white Jeep Grand Cherokee was traveling west in the left lane when the pedestrian, whose vehicle was disabled on the right shoulder, attempted to cross the westbound lanes.

Police said the man entered the vehicle’s path in the dark and was struck. He was transported to a nearby hospital, where he was pronounced dead. His identity is being withheld pending notification of next of kin.

The 30-year-old driver of the Jeep, from Bear, Delaware, and a 26-year-old female passenger were not injured in the crash.

Pulaski Highway was shut down for approximately four and a half hours as authorities conducted an investigation and cleared the scene.
