TOMS RIVER-If you’re not looking for it, you’ll probably pass it as you drive south towards Route 37 on your way to a day at the beach. If heading east on Route 37, you won’t even know it’s there, but if you’ve been there before, you’ll make sure you’ll hit OB-CO Donuts, located on Fischer Boulevard north, just a few hundred feet north of the Route 37 intersections.
This year, OB-Co is celebrating their 65th anniversary dishing out their delicious donuts to locals and vacationers alike. If you know about it, you also know you need to get there early, because each morning, the staff at Ob-CO makes their secret recipe donuts the same way they have done it since 1953 and once they’re done, they’re done.
The donut shop is open 7 days a week, 365 days a year and like they say, “We open at 5:00 AM and close when we are sold out.” If you want your favorite donuts, get in early.
OB-CO‘s owners Rick Browner and his wife Betty operate what has become somewhat of a cult phenomenon in Ocean County. They are best known for their original sugar raised donuts which have been a staple at the shop since the mid-twentieth century.
“Our signature donut is the sugar-raised which we have been famous since 1953,” they say. “It’s cinnamon-sugar coating is applied with a light touch.”
Can’t get in early enough, it’s not a problem, they allow their customers to call orders in ahead of time, the night before, but if you don’t call ahead or don’t get in early, chances are the droves of customers that frequent the shop daily might scoop up your favorites before you get there!
While nearby Uncle Doods has become somewhat of an underground icon of donut making in Toms River since opening, OB-CO has remained the traditional local favorite, relying on simplicity, quality and great tasting donuts for 65 years. They maintain a loyal following by putting something into their donuts something the new kid on the block downtown just can’t concoct by mixing flavors…history, tradition, and nostalgia.
