Virginia mourns the loss of sheriff's sergeant floyd h. Miles jr.

STAFFORD, VA — The Stafford County Sheriff’s Office has expressed profound sorrow over the passing of Sergeant Floyd H. Miles Jr., a respected member of the Charles City County Sheriff’s Office. Sgt. Miles tragically passed away following an incident on June 9, 2024, that occurred during a law enforcement response.

The incident began around 12:30 pm when a Charles City County Sheriff’s deputy was monitoring traffic at the intersection of John Tyler Memorial Highway (Rt. 5) and Wayside Road (Rt. 607). A man on a moped approached the deputy’s vehicle, and upon stopping, the moped fell onto the vehicle. The deputy noticed the man was injured and bloodied, and upon inquiry, the man expressed fear for his life. The deputy then secured him in the police vehicle and called for EMS.

Upon the arrival of EMS, the situation escalated when the man became combative, attacking the deputy and EMS personnel. Sgt. Miles arrived to assist and joined in the effort to control the subject. During the struggle, Sgt. Miles experienced a medical emergency and was urgently transported to MCV/New Kent Medical Center, where he sadly succumbed to his condition.

Sgt. Miles was a dedicated servant to Charles City County, where he was born and raised. After serving in the United States Army, he returned to his hometown to serve in the Sheriff’s Office for 16 years, supervising Patrol and Animal Control. Known for his passion for community service and animal welfare, Sgt. Miles recently graduated from Animal Control School and was highly respected for his contributions to law enforcement.

Sgt. Miles is survived by his parents, wife, three stepsons, siblings, and a grandson. His commitment to the residents of Charles City County and the Commonwealth of Virginia was unwavering.

The Virginia State Police Bureau of Criminal Investigation has taken over the case. The individual involved in the incident was transported to a hospital for examination and observation.
