Collingswood celebrates juneteenth with weeklong festivities

COLLINGSWOOD, NJ – The Borough of Collingswood, alongside the Collingswood Community Diversity Equity and Inclusion Committee, is excited to announce a week of events celebrating Juneteenth, culminating in a grand outdoor celebration on Sunday, June 16, starting at 11 a.m. in downtown Collingswood.

This celebration marks Juneteenth, a historically significant day that commemorates the emancipation of enslaved Africans in Texas and symbolizes the broader liberation of enslaved people across the United States. Collingswood’s event seeks to honor this important history and celebrate the cultural contributions of the Black diaspora.

Throughout the week leading up to June 16, the community will enjoy a variety of activities designed to educate and foster unity. These include educational workshops, cultural performances, and support for local Black-owned businesses and artists.

The main event on Sunday will feature performances by The Trumpet Chics and The Marian Anderson Music Guild, along with spoken word artists who will present powerful narratives and messages. Additionally, attendees can enjoy a diverse food selection, an arts market featuring Black-owned businesses, and the unveiling of a special Juneteenth T-shirt designed by local artist Anthony Johnson.

For younger attendees, the festival offers interactive crafts, a “Read Aloud” session, and other child-friendly activities aimed at inspiring the next generation. The event will also highlight local community groups providing anti-racism resources and fostering community collaboration.
