SIOUX FALLS, S.D. — A Sioux Falls man was sentenced Wednesday to two years and three months in federal prison after pleading guilty to possession of a stolen firearm, according to the U.S. Attorney’s Office.

Tanner Lee Hershman, 29, was sentenced by U.S. District Judge Karen E. Schrier to 27 months in prison, followed by three years of supervised release. He was also ordered to pay a $100 special assessment to the Federal Crime Victims Fund.

Authorities said the case stemmed from a domestic disturbance report on Dec. 21, 2023, during which the victim alleged Hershman had assaulted her and possessed a firearm despite being a convicted felon. Police later located a stolen Glock Model 44 semi-automatic pistol in the garage of the residence.

An investigation revealed that Hershman had stolen the firearm from a vehicle on Oct. 8, 2023. He was indicted in April 2024 on charges of possession of a stolen firearm and felon in possession of a firearm, later pleading guilty to the stolen firearm charge in August.

The case was prosecuted as part of Project Safe Neighborhoods, a federal program aimed at reducing violent crime through collaboration between law enforcement and communities. Homeland Security Investigations and the Sioux Falls Police Department conducted the investigation.

Hershman was immediately taken into custody by the U.S. Marshals Service following his sentencing.
