MIDDLETOWN, N.J. — The Middletown School District fell short of federal proficiency targets on statewide math and English assessments, according to newly released data from the New Jersey Department of Education.
In mathematics, only 52.2% of district students met or exceeded state expectations, well below the annual federal target of 57.7%. The district’s English language arts results showed slightly better performance, with 59% meeting or exceeding expectations, but this also failed to reach the target of 62.5%.
The federal accountability system measures proficiency rates based on participation and performance, requiring districts to meet annual targets aligned with the state’s long-term goal of achieving 80% proficiency by 2032. Middletown maintained high participation rates, with over 99% of eligible students taking the assessments.
However, the district’s inability to meet its targets means it remains off-track in its progress toward the 2032 state goal.
The latest results highlight persistent challenges for Middletown schools, particularly in math, where a significant gap remains between district outcomes and federal benchmarks.
