ICE’s Enforcement and Removal Operations Fugitive Operations and Special Response teams arrested Carlos Ambriz, 53, an unlawfully present Mexican national and convicted felon, on March 25 near his residence. Ambriz had previously been deported after serving time for a homicide conviction.
Ambriz was found guilty of deliberate homicide in a state court and sentenced to 40 years in prison for the death of his child. He first came into contact with immigration authorities while serving his sentence at a state prison, where officials issued him a notice to appear before an immigration judge.
Prior removal and return
An immigration judge ordered Ambriz’s removal to Mexico on July 3, 1999. He was deported from the U.S. on Jan. 26, 2006, through a port of entry near the U.S.-Mexico border.
Officials did not specify how or when Ambriz reentered the country. However, ICE confirmed that he was living in the U.S. unlawfully at the time of his recent arrest.
ICE Field Office Acting Director Josh Johnson said the severity of Ambriz’s crime posed a serious public safety concern. “This subject’s criminal record underscores the significant danger he represents to our community,” Johnson said.
Pending removal
Ambriz is currently being held in ICE custody and is pending removal proceedings. Federal authorities did not release additional information about his immigration hearing status or anticipated timeline for deportation.
