New York man pulls gun in road rage clash in Delaware with kids in both vehicles

DOVER, DE — A New York man was arrested Friday after allegedly brandishing a firearm during a road rage incident on Route 1 northbound near Dover, with children present in both vehicles, Delaware State Police said.

Donald Renfer, 44, of Chittenango, New York, was taken into custody at a Wawa gas station in Smyrna shortly after the 3:49 p.m. incident. Troopers responded to the store at 500 Jimmy Drive after receiving a report of a confrontation involving a firearm.

Investigators say Renfer, driving a white GMC pickup, was involved in an altercation with a 48-year-old woman and her two grandchildren just north of the Dover Toll Plaza. During the confrontation, Renfer allegedly displayed a firearm and threw a bottle at the victim’s vehicle.

The woman later saw the GMC at the Wawa and notified authorities. Troopers arrived and arrested Renfer without incident. A search of his truck uncovered a loaded black handgun and additional ammunition magazines. Two children were also inside Renfer’s truck during the event.

No injuries were reported.

Charges filed after armed confrontation

Renfer was transported to Troop 3, where he was charged with multiple offenses including aggravated menacing. He was arraigned by Justice of the Peace Court 7 and committed to Sussex Correctional Institution on a $24,750 secured bond.
