History marches on at Monmouth Battlefield with monthly guided walks

MANALAPAN, N.J. — Visitors can explore the grounds of one of the Revolutionary War’s most significant battles during the Monmouth Battlefield 1st Sunday Walks, held monthly at Monmouth Battlefield State Park.

Organized by the Friends of Monmouth Battlefield, these free guided walks begin at 1:30 p.m. on the first Sunday of each month, starting from the Visitor Center at 20 Route 33. The program runs continuously through December.

Each walk offers participants the chance to follow the footsteps of Revolutionary War soldiers, with guides providing historical context and pointing out key battlefield sites. Attendees are encouraged to wear appropriate hiking attire, as the routes are not ADA accessible and may include uneven terrain.

On February 2, the featured stop is the Point of Woods, the site of intense fighting in 1778. According to park historians, it was here that Brigadier General Anthony Wayne’s troops pushed back against British forces in an afternoon clash that helped shape the outcome of the Battle of Monmouth.

If weather conditions appear uncertain, visitors are advised to call the park office for updates before heading out.
