Chesapeake, VA – Drivers on Kempsville Road were met with a new layer of enforcement Monday as Chesapeake activated its first school zone speed camera just in time for the start of Greenbrier Christian Academy’s academic year.
The automated camera system, part of the city’s PhotoSafe Speed Enforcement program, is designed to monitor vehicle speeds in designated school zones. Signage has been posted to alert drivers about the photo enforcement, and violators will only receive a citation after a Chesapeake Police officer individually reviews any flagged images.
The rest of the city’s school zone speed cameras are scheduled to go live on Tuesday, September 2, aligning with the return of students to Chesapeake Public Schools. Motorists found exceeding posted limits during school hours may be fined after the camera captures a photo of the license plate, which is then reviewed by police before any citation is issued.
