Driver takes Forest Lane too literally after crashing into woods during third DUI arrest
Stafford County, VA – What began as a late-night house party ended in handcuffs for a Milford man who drove his car straight into the woods early Saturday morning, earning his third DUI arrest in five years.
Deputies say 32-year-old Mathew Trego was behind the wheel of a Ford that veered roughly 40 yards off Forest Lane Road around 4:32 a.m. When Deputy S.A. Fulford arrived, he found the vehicle lodged deep in the trees and the driver showing clear signs of intoxication.
According to the sheriff’s office, Trego admitted he had been drinking at a party, consuming two whiskey drinks and three beers before getting behind the wheel. He told deputies he “accidentally went off the road” and, instead of braking, “accelerated,” sending the car directly into the forest.
Trego’s cooperation did little to offset his record. Investigators confirmed it was his third DUI offense within five years. He was arrested and taken to the Rappahannock Regional Jail, where he remains held without bond.
Officials say the crash caused no reported injuries but serve as another reminder of the dangers of impaired driving. The Stafford County Sheriff’s Office continues to stress zero tolerance for repeat DUI offenders.
