NEW WINDSOR, N.Y. – A construction crew working on a gas line project in the Hudson Valley made a grisly discovery this week when human remains were unearthed at a worksite in Orange County.

The remains were found Tuesday around 1:30 p.m. along Sloop Hill Road by Central Hudson workers digging for a gas line installation.

New York State Police have since confirmed that an active investigation is underway into the find, which some officials say could be connected to a decades-old mob burial site rumored to exist in the area.

Key Points

  • Human remains were discovered during a gas line construction project in New Windsor.
  • Investigators are exploring possible ties to a historic mob burial ground.
  • The State Police Forensic Identification Unit and BCI are leading the case.

Workers make grim discovery during excavation

According to State Police, troopers from the Montgomery barracks responded after the remains were uncovered by a Central Hudson crew near the wooded area about three miles northeast of Storm King State Park. The area was quickly secured as forensic specialists and investigators arrived on scene to recover evidence and assess the site.

Possible connection to organized crime

Law enforcement sources familiar with the region said Sloop Hill Road and surrounding properties have long been rumored to hold ties to organized crime activity dating back to the 1970s and 1980s. While officials have not confirmed any direct link, the discovery has prompted renewed attention to several unsolved cases associated with suspected mob operations in the Hudson Valley.

Investigation expands with forensic teams

The Troop F Forensic Identification Unit and the Bureau of Criminal Investigation are examining the remains to determine identity, age, and cause of death. Investigators are also reviewing missing persons reports and historical case files from Orange and neighboring counties.

Public urged to avoid area as probe continues

State Police have asked residents to stay clear of the excavation site while the forensic recovery continues. Officials said updates will be released once laboratory analysis and identification efforts are complete.
