HOWELL TOWNSHIP, NJ – Visitors to the Manasquan River Reservoir on Friday morning were met with an unusual sight — soldiers marching the trail with what appeared to be rifles.
Police quickly clarified that the display was part of a scheduled National Guard training exercise.
The Howell Township Police Department said there was no cause for alarm and no threat to the public.
According to a post from the department, members of the New Jersey National Guard were conducting a ruck march at the popular park, a routine endurance exercise for service members.
Officials said one participant was carrying a mock rifle as part of the training, prompting a police advisory to inform residents in advance.

The department emphasized that the activity was planned and supervised, noting that training events like this are standard practice for Guard units preparing for field operations. Officers remained in contact with the National Guard during the event to ensure public safety.
The message urged residents not to be alarmed if they encountered the soldiers on the trail and reminded the public to report any unrelated suspicious activity as usual.
