Threat forces lockdown at Highlands church and nearby schools

Police say no injuries reported after bomb threat prompts evacuations and large law enforcement response.

HIGHLANDS, NC – A threat targeting staff at the Highlands Episcopal Church of the Incarnation on Main Street prompted a massive law enforcement response and lockdown of nearby facilities Thursday morning, authorities said.

The incident began around 10:40 a.m. when the Highlands Police Department received a call reporting a threat directed at church personnel. The property, which also houses a children’s day care, was immediately secured as officers arrived on scene and began clearing the area.

Detective Amber Wright launched an investigation within minutes, working to identify and contact the individual responsible for the threat. As a precaution, police ordered a lockdown of surrounding businesses, the Highlands School, and two additional day care centers.

Regional agencies assist during evacuation

Authorities requested assistance from the Macon County Sheriff’s Office and its Special Response Team, along with support from the North Carolina State Bureau of Investigation. A bomb squad was also deployed after the caller claimed there was an explosive device.

With sufficient personnel in place, officers and deputies began methodically escorting children and staff from the affected facilities to safety. Streets near the 500 block of Main Street were temporarily closed as investigators conducted a full sweep of the area.

Investigation remains active

As of Thursday afternoon, police confirmed that everyone was accounted for and no injuries were reported. The threat remains under active investigation, and officials have not yet disclosed whether any suspects have been identified.

The Highlands Police Department said it will continue to release updates as appropriate. “The safety of our community will always be our top priority,” officials stated, thanking residents for their patience and cooperation during the incident.
