Officials say one deputy fired a single round after the suspect threatened officers during confrontation on George’s Fork Road.
BURNSVILLE, NC – A standoff in rural Yancey County ended with a man being shot by law enforcement Tuesday afternoon after he aimed a crossbow at deputies, authorities said.
According to the Yancey County Sheriff’s Office, the incident unfolded on George’s Fork Road when deputies responded to a call that escalated into an armed standoff. During the confrontation, the suspect allegedly raised a crossbow fitted with a broadhead tip and pointed it at the deputies.
In response to what officials described as an “immediate threat,” one deputy fired a single shot, striking the suspect.
Suspect airlifted for medical treatment
Deputies immediately rendered aid at the scene until emergency medical personnel arrived. The suspect was airlifted to Mission Hospital in Asheville for treatment. Authorities have not released the suspect’s name or current condition.
No deputies were injured during the encounter.
Investigation underway
The Sheriff’s Office confirmed that the North Carolina State Bureau of Investigation has been notified and is assisting with the ongoing inquiry, which is standard procedure for officer-involved shootings.
Officials said additional details, including the reason deputies were initially called to the residence, will be released once the investigation progresses.
Residents in the area reported a heavy law enforcement presence on George’s Fork Road as the situation unfolded but were not believed to be in danger.
The Sheriff’s Office said in a statement that “this remains an active investigation,” and no further information will be provided until it is complete.
