Utica hospital nurse attacked by patient in violent hospital assault
Utica, NY – A nurse was violently attacked inside Wynn Hospital on Monday night when a 70-year-old patient repeatedly struck her in the head before hospital security intervened and police made an arrest.
The assault happened around 9:15 p.m. when hospital staff reported that a male patient suddenly approached a nurse and began hitting her without warning. Despite the sudden nature of the attack, the nurse managed to partially subdue the patient long enough for security officers to arrive and help gain control of the situation.
Responding Utica Police units arrived at the hospital shortly after and took the suspect, identified as Mark Kozien, into custody. Kozien, who has no known address, was transported to the Utica Police Department and charged with Assault in the second degree.
Officials have not disclosed the motive behind the assault or the current condition of the nurse, but the incident is under further investigation. Second-degree assault is a felony under New York State law, and charges can carry significant penalties if convicted.
