Kearny, NJ – A tense overnight standoff in Kearny ended early Sunday after a man suspected in a fatal stabbing barricaded himself inside a home that later caught fire before he was taken into custody, authorities said.
The incident began Saturday evening when Kearny police were called to the intersection of Kearny Avenue and Johnston Avenue for reports of an injured man. Responding officers found a male victim suffering from apparent stab wounds. Despite emergency efforts, the man was pronounced dead at the scene.
Investigators quickly identified a person of interest connected to the killing, who then locked himself inside a nearby residence on Kearny Avenue. The Hudson County Regional SWAT team was dispatched to the scene as negotiators attempted to make contact with the suspect.
In the early hours of Sunday morning, as negotiations continued, a fire broke out inside the barricaded home. Fire crews responded while tactical units maintained a perimeter. Once the blaze was brought under control, the man emerged from the house armed with knives. Officers moved in and safely took him into custody without further injuries.
The Hudson County Prosecutor’s Office confirmed that the investigation remains active and ongoing. No further details, including the identities of the victim or suspect, have been released pending next-of-kin notification and formal charges.
