Brother charged after stabbing during family dispute in Utica home

Utica, NY — A late-night argument between two brothers inside a quiet Utica neighborhood turned violent Sunday when one man was stabbed in the abdomen, leading to felony charges and a police investigation on Pinewood Drive.

Just before 8 p.m. on December 21, Utica Police and Utica Fire units were dispatched to a residence in the 400 block of Pinewood Drive following reports of a stabbing. Officers arrived and spoke with the victim, who said the confrontation began as an argument with his brother before escalating.

According to police, the suspect pulled out a knife and stabbed the victim once in the side of the abdomen. The suspect, identified as 49-year-old Gregory Wakeel of Utica, was detained at the scene and later transported to the Utica Police Department.

Emergency responders transported the victim to Wynn Hospital for treatment. Authorities said his injuries were determined to be non-life-threatening.

Following the investigation, Wakeel was charged with assault in the second degree and criminal possession of a weapon in the third degree. No further details about the dispute were released.

The case remains under review by Utica police.
