Manchester opens temporary warming shelter as power restoration continues

Manchester, NJ – Township officials have opened a temporary warming shelter for residents still without power following widespread outages caused by electrical substation repairs overnight.

The Manchester Police Department announced that the shelter, located at the Whiting EMS Annex at 82 Lacey Road, opened at 9 a.m. Friday to assist residents affected by the remaining outages. The site provides warmth, charging access, and basic support services and is staffed by one EMS unit and a police officer.

According to Jersey Central Power & Light (JCP&L), crews completed major substation repairs and switching operations overnight, reducing the number of affected customers to roughly 1,000. Utility workers are continuing restoration efforts this morning, taking precautions to prevent circuit overloads, particularly in homes using electric heat.

Town officials said full power restoration is expected later this morning and urged residents to share information about the shelter with neighbors who may still be impacted.
