TOTOWA, N.J. – A Newark firefighter was among two adults killed early Monday in a head-on collision caused by a wrong-way driver on Interstate 80 in Totowa, according to state police and city officials.
Authorities identified the firefighter as 30-year-old Albin Fermin, who served with Engine 10 of the Newark Fire Department. Newark Public Safety Director Emanuel Miranda Sr. confirmed Fermin joined the department on February 5, 2024.
According to New Jersey State Police, Fermin was driving a Honda sedan eastbound in the westbound lanes of I-80 when he collided head-on with a Buick SUV near milepost 54.1. The SUV was driven by 60-year-old Joanne Furman of Norwich, Connecticut. Passengers included 24-year-old Imani Alexis Furman and a two-year-old child, also from Norwich.
Both Fermin and Joanne Furman were killed in the crash. Imani Furman and the child were transported to a local hospital with undisclosed injuries.
The crash remains under investigation by the New Jersey State Police Fatal Accident Investigation Unit.
