Baltimore man hits $53K Bonus Match 5 jackpot after playing same numbers nine different ways
BALTIMORE, MD — A Baltimore man who plays the same four numbers in Maryland’s Bonus Match 5 game and rotates just one digit for variety finally hit the jackpot — walking away with a $50,000 top prize plus an extra $3,200 in lower-tier winnings.
In the Jan. 2 drawing, the man’s persistent play style paid off. He used a consistent base of 01, 03, 06, and 07, then added a different fifth number on each of nine separate plays: 28, 39, 17, 21, 36, 23, 30, 35, and 09. The total cost of the plays was just $6, thanks to the game’s built-in multi-play discount.
One of those combinations hit all five winning numbers, earning him the $50,000 top prize. Several of his other eight lines also matched enough digits to secure additional prizes, pushing his total win to $53,200.
The winner claimed his prize at Maryland Lottery Headquarters in Baltimore on Monday, accompanied by a friend who also plays the Lottery. He has remained a regular player over the years, favoring draw games and avoiding scratch-offs. Though he’s previously won smaller prizes, this marks his largest payout yet.
The winning ticket was purchased at Hamilton News, located at 5438 Harford Road. The retailer will receive a $500 bonus for selling the top-prize winning ticket.
The player has not shared the meaning behind the numbers but says he’s not finished playing and hopes to return again with another big win.
