WILMINGTON, DE – The Delaware State Police are investigating a deadly two-vehicle head-on crash that occurred late Friday night on I-95 south of Harvey Road, leaving a 19-year-old Newark woman dead and another driver injured.
Authorities said the crash happened around 8:55 p.m. when a Chrysler 200 traveling northbound crossed the grass median and collided head-on with a southbound Volvo truck-tractor pulling a vehicle transporter loaded with three cars.
The 19-year-old driver of the Chrysler, who police said was not properly restrained, was ejected from her vehicle. She was transported to a nearby hospital where she was pronounced dead. Her identity has not yet been released pending notification of family.
Truck driver hospitalized, road closed for hours
The driver of the Volvo truck, a 34-year-old man from New York, was also taken to the hospital with non-life-threatening injuries. He was the sole occupant of the vehicle.
Troopers closed the roadway for approximately six hours overnight to conduct an on-scene investigation and remove debris from the highway. Traffic was diverted until the scene was cleared early Saturday morning.
The Delaware State Police Collision Reconstruction Unit is continuing to investigate the cause of the crash, including whether impairment, speed, or weather conditions played a role.
