Sister’s reminder leads Prince George’s County woman to $50K scratch-off prize

DISTRICT HEIGHTS, Md. — A quick stop at a Wawa after a reminder from her sister turned into a $50,000 windfall for a Prince George’s County woman playing a Maryland Lottery scratch-off.

The medical assistant said she was heading home after a long day of work when her sister called to remind her to play her Lottery numbers. The call led her to make a brief stop at the Wawa located at 2151 Brooks Drive in District Heights.

While inside the store, she purchased several draw game tickets and a $10 scratch-off before deciding at the last moment to go back and buy one more ticket — a $5 Winning Streak scratch-off.

Later at home, she followed her usual routine of partially scratching the ticket and attempting to scan it using the Maryland Lottery app. Instead of displaying the prize amount, the app instructed her to take the ticket to a retailer.

After scratching the ticket completely, she discovered the winning symbol for the game’s $50,000 top prize.

The woman shared the news with her family before calling the sister whose earlier reminder prompted the Lottery stop.

She told Maryland Lottery officials she plans to use the winnings to buy new furniture, take a family trip to Belize and help cover travel expenses for her daughter’s competitive cheer competitions.

The Wawa that sold the ticket will receive a $500 bonus from the Maryland Lottery for selling the top-prize-winning scratch-off.
