Schenectady police warn residents after spike in car break-ins across city
SCHENECTADY, N.Y. — A recent increase in thefts from motor vehicles has prompted police in Schenectady to warn residents to take precautions to protect their cars and belongings.
Officials said many of the incidents involve vehicles that were left unlocked or had valuables visible inside, making them easy targets for thieves.
Authorities are urging residents to lock vehicle doors at all times, even when parked in driveways or for short periods.
Police also recommend removing valuables such as bags, electronics, wallets and loose change from vehicles and avoiding leaving packages or other property in plain view.
Additional safety tips include parking in well-lit areas, using exterior lighting or security cameras near homes and always taking keys or key fobs when leaving a vehicle.
Investigators said most thefts from vehicles are crimes of opportunity and simple precautions can significantly reduce the risk of becoming a victim.
Residents are encouraged to report suspicious activity immediately.
Emergencies should be reported by calling 911. Non-emergency reports can be made by contacting the Schenectady Police Department at 518-630-0911.
