Two men charged following targeted enforcement operation in Elm Street area

Cambridge, MD – A proactive enforcement operation in Cambridge led to the arrest of two men, the recovery of a loaded handgun, and multiple charges following a vehicle pursuit and foot chase, police said.

The operation took place Thursday between noon and 5 p.m. in the Elm Street and Pine Street area, where officers have received ongoing complaints of trespassing and drug activity. Multiple specialized units, including the department’s drone and K9 teams, were deployed.

Drone tracks suspect vehicle during pursuit

Police said officers identified a vehicle leaving the area and, with assistance from the Drone Unit, tracked it as it committed traffic violations. A traffic stop was initiated, but the driver, identified as 33-year-old Wayne Cornish Jr. of Cambridge, refused to comply and fled.

“The Drone Unit was able to keep observing the vehicle as it left the area and relay information to other units,” police said.

Gun, suspected drugs recovered after arrest

Officers deployed a tire deflation device before pursuing the vehicle through multiple streets. A tracking device was later used as the vehicle continued driving recklessly before losing control.

Cornish was taken into custody without incident. A K9 alerted to the presence of drugs, and a search of the vehicle revealed a loaded Ruger handgun and a digital scale with suspected cocaine residue. Police said Cornish is prohibited from possessing a firearm and is being held without bond on numerous charges, including firearm violations and attempting to elude police.

Second arrest made during foot chase

In a separate incident during the same operation, officers responded to reports of trespassing. A suspect fled on foot but was tracked by the Drone Unit and apprehended in a backyard near Pine Street.

The suspect, identified as 29-year-old Rondrez Tyvonne Ward of Atlantic, Virginia, was arrested after briefly resisting officers. Police said he was later released on his own recognizance.
