Routine stop uncovers loaded firearm and sparks chase

Boston, MA — A routine traffic stop in Roxbury escalated into a foot chase after a teenager allegedly tossed a backpack containing a loaded firearm and fled from officers.

The incident unfolded around 4:52 p.m. Tuesday when officers stopped a vehicle for a defective taillight near Walnut Avenue and Dale Street. As police approached, one of the rear passengers exited the car holding a blue backpack and dropped it at an officer’s feet before running.

Officers pursued the 17-year-old and took him into custody after a brief chase into a yard on Rockland Avenue.

Police then examined the discarded backpack and recovered a loaded Sarsilmaz SAR-9 9mm semi-automatic pistol with 17 rounds in the magazine. The firearm was equipped with a light and laser attachment.

The juvenile faces multiple charges, including carrying a firearm without a license, possession of ammunition without an FID card, carrying a loaded firearm, and possession of a large-capacity feeding device. He is also charged with wanton destruction of property over $1,200.

The driver of the vehicle was issued citations for a defective taillight and an inspection violation and was released at the scene.
