Suffolk County, NY – Suffolk County District Attorney Raymond A. Tierney announced that Joel Badger, 20, of Medford, has been sentenced to 22 years in prison for his role in a violent Bloodhound Brims gang conspiracy and an armed robbery in Ridge.
Badger was one of 31 defendants charged in a 103-count indictment following a long-term investigation led by the Suffolk County District Attorney’s Gang Task Force and the Suffolk County Police Department into violence committed by members of the Bloodhound Brims between August 2021 and February 2024. Prosecutors said all 31 defendants have now been convicted.
Investigation linked gang to shootings and robberies
According to prosecutors, the indictment encompassed three long-term conspiracies and 34 separate incidents, including 18 shootings, three armed robberies, and the recovery of 12 loaded handguns connected to 13 shootings.
“This sentence should send a clear message to all gang members that gang violence will not be tolerated in Suffolk County,” Tierney said. “I promised the people of Suffolk County that we would make sure gang members in our community are held accountable for their actions.”
He added, “I promised that not only would we bring consequential, long-term conspiracy indictments but we would also follow through on those indictments and ensure that the defendants go to prison for a significant period of time. This case is a perfect example of that.”
Prosecutors describe role in murder conspiracy
According to the district attorney’s office, Badger admitted he was an active member of the Bloodhound Brims and participated in violence directed by higher-ranking gang members to increase his status within the organization.
Prosecutors said the conspiracy included the April 1, 2023, fatal shooting of 44-year-old schoolteacher Kimberly Midgette in Hempstead, Nassau County. Investigators allege gang members mistakenly believed Midgette was affiliated with a rival gang. Badger pleaded guilty to conspiracy related to the homicide but is still awaiting prosecution in Nassau County on the substantive murder charge.
Badger also admitted participating in an armed robbery on Sept. 27, 2023, when he and two accomplices allegedly lured a victim to a parking lot in Ridge. Prosecutors said Badger displayed a firearm while robbing the victim, and one of his accomplices slashed the victim with a knife during the attack.
Sentenced after guilty plea
Badger pleaded guilty on Jan. 12 to second-degree conspiracy and first-degree robbery before Acting Supreme Court Justice Anthony S. Senft Jr.
On July 8, Justice Senft sentenced him to 22 years in state prison followed by five years of post-release supervision. He was represented by attorney Chase Brown.
