Alabama mother charged after 2-year-old found bound face down for hours

A toddler’s death in Chambers County has led to a murder charge against her mother following allegations the child was restrained and left face down for more than 12 hours.

CUSSETA, AL – A 2-year-old girl died after being bound and placed face down on a bed for an extended period, according to the Chambers County Sheriff’s Office, which announced the arrest of the child’s mother Thursday. Sierra Hadaway, 22, is charged with murder in the death of her daughter, Madilynn Hadaway, last month.

Deputies were dispatched to the home in the Cusseta area around 9 a.m. on June 12 after a report of a child not breathing. Responders attempted lifesaving measures until Lanett EMS transported the toddler to a local hospital, where she was pronounced dead.

Investigation details and arrest
“Over the course of the investigation, investigators learned that the child’s arms, legs and ankles were bound and she was placed face down on a bed for more than 12 hours,” the sheriff’s office said. “It is believed the child died from asphyxiation.”

Authorities said the case remains active. “This case remains under investigation by the Chambers County Sheriff’s Office, the 5th Judicial Circuit District Attorney’s Office and the Alabama Department of Forensic Science,” the CCSO post said.

A second individual identified as Christian Myles Sturkie died from a self-inflicted gunshot wound on June 14, two days after the child’s death. Officials did not say whether he had any involvement in the incident.

Community impact and victim remembrance
An obituary for Madilynn described a young child remembered for her energy and personality. “Though her time with us was far too brief, Madilynn filled our lives with immeasurable love, laughter, and happiness,” the obituary states. “Her bright smile, curious spirit, and joyful heart brought life to everyone who knew her.”

Hadaway is being held at the Chambers County Detention Facility without bond.
