What started as a routine grocery run ended with a Burtonsville woman claiming the top prize on a Maryland Lottery scratch-off.
BURTONSVILLE, MD — A quick stop at a Lottery vending machine during a grocery trip turned into a $50,000 surprise for a Burtonsville woman after one scratch-off ticket revealed the game’s top prize.
The Maryland Lottery said the woman visited Lottery headquarters on Thursday, July 23, with her husband to claim her $50,000 prize.
The winner said she began playing scratch-offs only a few years ago and decided to purchase $20 worth of tickets while shopping at a Giant supermarket.
Among the tickets she selected was a $5 Multiply Your Money scratch-off.
According to the Lottery, about half of the tickets were winners. After uncovering a $5 prize on one ticket, she scratched another and revealed the game’s $50,000 top prize.
“I was dumbfounded,” the winner said.
Still in disbelief, she scanned the ticket to verify the prize before rushing home to surprise her husband.
The couple said they have not yet decided how they will spend the money and plan to wait until the prize is deposited before making any decisions. Whatever they choose, the winner said it will be something “special.”
She also said she plans to continue playing scratch-off tickets for fun.
The winning ticket was purchased at the Giant supermarket located at 1009 Fairlawn Street in the Prince George’s County portion of Laurel. The retailer will receive a $500 bonus from the Maryland Lottery for selling the top-prize-winning ticket.
