ShotSpotter detects overnight burst before officers find five shell casings in roadway
UTICA, NY – An 18-year-old was walking home early Wednesday when unknown individuals unleashed multiple rounds near a Utica intersection, striking the teen in the leg before five spent shell casings were discovered in the roadway, police said.
Utica Police received a ShotSpotter alert at approximately 12:30 a.m. for multiple rounds fired near Bleecker Street and Jefferson Avenue.
Officers responding to the area located five spent shell casings in the roadway.
Police then learned that a shooting victim was being transported to Wynn Hospital.
Officers went to the hospital and found an 18-year-old male victim suffering from a gunshot wound to his lower leg.
The teen told police he had been walking home when unknown individuals fired multiple rounds at him, striking him once.
Police did not release information about the teen’s condition beyond identifying the location of his wound.
No description of the people believed to have fired the shots was released, and police did not disclose a possible motive for the shooting.
The case has been assigned to the Utica Police Major Crimes Unit.
