WASHINGTON, D.C. — D.C. Police are seeking assistance in locating a suspect involved in the theft of a vehicle with an infant inside. The incident occurred in the 3000 block of M Street in Northwest D.C., just after 6 p.m., and was initially reported as a child abduction.
When it was taken, the 4-month-old child was in the backseat of a white Jeep SUV. Approximately an hour later, as police were about to issue an Amber Alert, they received information that the baby had been found safe.
The thief had removed the car seat with the infant and left it on a porch in the 2700 block of Pennsylvania Avenue, Southeast. After hearing a knock, the homeowner discovered the baby girl and immediately alerted a nearby officer. Thankfully, the baby was unharmed and was swiftly reunited with her mother.
At a press conference, Assistant Chief of Patrol Services North, Darnell Robinson, mentioned that the circumstances leading to the incident are under investigation. He highlighted that the incident might not be a typical carjacking, noting that people often leave their cars running and unattended during winter.
In response to queries about measures against carjackings and vehicle thefts, Assistant Chief Robinson stated that while advice has been provided to residents, a specific plan to combat these crimes is not yet in place.
The stolen white Jeep has not yet been recovered; no suspect description is available.
