Adams fires back at Mamdani defends record on NYC finances and migrant crisis

NEW YORK, NY – Former Mayor Eric Adams took a pointed jab at incoming city leadership Friday, defending his administration’s financial record and response to New York’s mounting crises while criticizing what he called unrealistic expectations from his successor.

“Let me get this straight,” Adams wrote on social media. “The Adams administration earned top bond ratings, left the incoming mayor a record $8B in reserves, navigated the city through COVID, absorbed a $9B migrant crisis, and survived. And now the new administration is complaining? The fastest way to balance a budget is to admit that ‘free’ comes with a price tag.”

The post appeared to be directed at newly sworn-in Mayor Zohran Mamdani, who has criticized Adams’ fiscal policies and budget cuts in recent weeks, arguing that the city must do more to protect housing, education, and social services despite ongoing financial pressures.

Adams’ statement marks one of his most forceful public responses since leaving office, positioning himself as a steady hand who guided New York through pandemic recovery and an unprecedented surge of asylum seekers that strained city resources. His claim of leaving behind $8 billion in reserves aligns with fiscal data released by the city’s Office of Management and Budget before his departure.

Mamdani, a progressive from Queens, has pledged to pursue what he calls “a people’s budget,” expanding public investment and reevaluating the city’s reliance on austerity measures. His administration has not yet formally responded to Adams’ remarks, though senior advisers have previously suggested that the former mayor overstated the city’s fiscal strength.

Adams, however, doubled down on his defense, warning that political rhetoric cannot replace economic reality. “Free comes with a price tag,” he wrote, a line that quickly drew both praise from fiscal conservatives and criticism from Mamdani supporters who accused the former mayor of dismissing social equity concerns.

Eric Adams defended his record and financial stewardship of New York City, blasting new Mayor Zohran Mamdani’s criticism as unrealistic in the face of fiscal and migrant crises.
