ALEXANDRIA, VA— In a tense late-night emergency, Alexandria Police Department (APD) Officers Hiltz and Reilly played crucial roles in saving the life of a newborn baby. The incident occurred just after midnight when the officers responded to a frantic 9-1-1 call from an apartment on Executive Avenue.
Upon arrival, the officers found a lifeless newborn who had just been delivered. Officer Hiltz immediately began administering cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR), while Officer Reilly worked to calm the distressed family. After two rounds of CPR, a pulse was detected, and the baby began to cry, signaling a turn in the critical situation.
Both the mother and the newborn, named Luis IV, are now reported to be in good health after a brief stay in the NICU. The family has since returned home, with baby Luis’s condition stable.
The swift and effective actions of Officers Hiltz and Reilly were later praised by both EMS and emergency room personnel as life-saving. Reflecting on the incident, Officer Hiltz expressed the profound impact of the experience, emphasizing the joy and relief of hearing baby Luis cry.
The officers, who have more than four years of service with APD, visited the family a week later, sharing a moment of joy and pride with the grateful parents.
