Allentown Man Sentenced for Attempted Murder in Auto Zone Shooting

ALLENTOWN, PA—District Attorney Gavin P. Holihan announced the sentencing of Joshua Ortiz, an Allentown resident, for his role in a 2023 shooting that escalated from a confrontation in an Auto Zone parking lot. On Monday, Judge James T. Anthony handed down a sentence of 7 years and 3 months to 15 years in state prison to Ortiz, who pleaded guilty to Attempted Murder on April 22.

The violent incident, which unfolded on June 4, 2023, at 1871 South 5th Street, involved two groups and resulted in a shooting. According to the investigation, Ortiz was among five individuals in a sedan that pursued and threatened another group. This confrontation led to a physical altercation in the parking lot where Ortiz fired several shots.

During the exchange, an individual identified only as John Doe retaliated in self-defense, fatally wounding Edgar Gonzalez, a friend of Ortiz. Authorities determined Doe was legally armed and justified in using deadly force, resulting in no charges against him for Gonzalez’s death.

Ortiz, who also sustained gunshot wounds in the incident, has now been held accountable for his actions as the legal proceedings come to a close.
